Semper paratus

It was hubris to think I could learn hiragana and katakana in a week. Saturday I went to Kinokuniya and got some awesome flashcards from White Rabbit Press. One side has the romaji with the symbol and visual mnemonic, the other has just the symbol.

Some of the mnemonics are straightforward,

suit

some are hilarious (what is up with that u-turn?),

u-turn
and some are simply inexplicable.

Maybe the japanese haven't invented the pretzel yet?

Well, according to my extensive culinary research, they have pretzels, but their favorite kind is straight.
