Tako tako, takoyaki

Of all the things I'll miss about Japan, excellent fast food ranks pretty highly on the list.  I love the 24-hour places with ticket vending machines, where ordering and paying are combined into a single step.  The food's not bad, either.  From Yayoiken in Hiroshima:
After poking around in Hiroshima and getting a bad-ass ekiben for the train ride to Osaka, we arrived at the Swissotel Nankai.  We narrowly averted tragedy (a smoking room with two twin beds) then walked over to Dontonbori, a haven for street food lovers.  Visiting Dotonbori is an ordeal for curmudgeons like us: the crushing crowds, neon overload, surly shopkeepers, inattentive bicyclists.
Osaka is famous for its takoyaki, bits of octopus grilled in eggy batter.  We got some from Creo-ru, where there is a line manager to keep things copacetic.  The takoyaki makers fill huge iron griddles with golf-ball size divots with batter, then plunk down some tentacles before furiously spinning the takoyaki with skewers to get a crispy finish.  The final result is a golden brown mouthful, eggy with chewy bits of octopus on the inside.
The Swissotel is pretty nice, despite the initial room screwup. The location can't be beat, and the view is pretty good, too. Next stop, Kyoto.
